Every June brings the pinnacle in grass-court Grand Slam tennis action to UK shores with the Wimbledon Championships, and with it hundreds of mentions of strawberries and cream.
Now, I would never turn down a delicious bowl of fresh, sweet strawberries and British cream – who would?! – but running a blog half-dedicated to the amazing food that is cake, I can’t help thinking tennis fans should be eating something a little bit more interesting than the traditional fruit and dairy fare.
So here are some interesting takes on tennis-inspired cakes found on Pinterest, via Twitter and on cupcake blogs. I hope by the end of the post you’ll feel inspired to try baking some of your own tennis treats
(Also, I wholeheartedly recommend BBC Sport’s live tennis blog for following all the ace(!) racket action if you’re stuck working in the office).

Vegan lemon-lime tennis ball cupcake
First up, this recipe from Healthy Happy Life is completely vegan-friendly and looks delicious.

Net and ball cupcakes
I found these cool-looking cakes on Pinterest, but unfortunately I can’t find the original recipe.

Neon green and yellow treats
Gorgeous neon flowered cakes, from Pinterest and also on The Daily Cupcake.

Hummingbird Bakery match point cupcakes

Hummingbird Bakery Wimbledon inspired cupcakes
The latest smashing creation from the famous Hummingbird Bakery. Limited edition Wimbledon cupcakes available until July 8.

Pink tennis cake pops
Now these are pretty, and not cupcakes I know. They’re inspired by the French Open which finished a couple of weeks ago. I think all tennis matches should use baby pink tennis balls from now on. Might not be practical though!

Lime and strawberry stuffed cupcake
All I can say is YUM. Not exactly the same as the other ideas featured here but for something a bit more subtle and requiring a little less work this is perfect. The recipe’s from Food Network. (And the strawberry is added afterwards, in case you were wondering).
