"Doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did."

- William Butler, 16th Century writer

It must be summer in Perthshire because it's warm and sunny and local strawberries are appearing all over the place.

There's a small town called Coupar Angus just a few miles from where I live, and every year a travelling strawberry seller sets up shop on a rough bit of ground next to the Red House Hotel there.

Easter treats: vanilla cupcakes and cornflake cakes

I was really looking forward to making these before the Easter weekend. Originally I was going to make Nigella’s Easter egg nest cake but didn’t make it to the shops in time to get all the ingredients, so I used what was already in the cupboard.

I made a mix of vanilla cupcakes with buttercream icing and good old chocolate cornflake cakes to be a little bit different, and also because I just couldn’t decide between the two! I think the contrast when arranged together looks pretty good on my new cake stand. Although my buttercream left a lot to be desired, I definitely need a lot more practice at piping!

Welcome to Tea and Cake

This is a first for me. It is not a university project, nor is it a personal portfolio designed to get me a job in journalism, it is a site devoted to two of the biggest loves in my life.

Tea and cake.

These two simple things are loved the world over and bring comfort, joy and provide stress relief – I’m thinking of the English ‘drink tea in times of stress’ stereotype here – to many. So I decided to start this blog which I will update at a pace that is dictated by no deadlines, no job-seeking pressures, no ‘try to impress employers online’ etc. I think you get the jist.

All that’s left to say is if you like tea and if you like cake, you should like Tea and Cake.
